Why write this book?
I think the purpose for Chbosky to write this book, was for many reasons. One could be to let high schoolers realize what life is like for some people who are struggling. Lots of kids keep their problems secret and don't let anyone in their lives, kids go through rough times, and do bad things. Another reason why the author wrote this book, is to show how high school relationships have their ups and downs. Love can be very difficult, can ruin things with friends, and someone will end up broken in the end. Chbosky also shows how starting out high school can be for those people, like Charlie. I personally was scared of going to high school, but I have friends that will be there with me through it. I can't personally know how Charlie took it, starting out with no friends, and never being noticed. He was scared, shy and didn't make friends easily. The last reason I came up with was having problems in your past at home. This last reason can be past or present. Charlie has to deal with his sister and her boyfriend, but more importantly with his past. He had a rough childhood, dealing with relatives.
Books in comparison
I found some books that relate to The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I hope to read them later on. The first one is called It's Kind of a Funny Story. This book relates to P.B.W., because the main character goes through a suicidal stage and is sent to a hospital. Charlie had to go to a hospital for months. In the end of the book he is sent back to a hospital. Another thing from It's Kind of a Funny Story, is about love. The main character falls for his best friend's girlfriend. In P.B.W., Charlie falls for Sam, a girl he can't have. Both books share some similarities.
Another book I found that can relate to P.B.W., is Looking for Alaska. In Looking for Alaska, the main character is emotional unstable. She commits suicide after she struggles at her school. This is alike with Charlie, because he tried committing suicide and had many suicide thoughts.
